2005 saw a significant number of losses in the Arts community. Actors Michael Billington (aka Colonel Paul Foster - U.F.O.), Ed Bishop (aka Colonel Ed Straker - U.F.O.) within days of each other in June, Dana Elcar (aka Pete Thornton - McGyver) in the same week, Michael Sheard (aka Admiral Ozzle - The Empire Strikes Back) 31 Aug, as welll as Authors Andre Norton and Michael G. Coney. I knew Mike Sheard, Andre Norton and Mike Coney very well. Mike Billington and I were renewing an old acquaintance at the time of his passing. I mention Dana Elcar because I loved the series and often wondered what happened to him when it wrapped. It was while checking up on his credits that I discovered he had died. To all, thank you for your contributions. You will be missed.
Upcoming: A yearly SF Convention is NorWesCon in Seattle, WA at the end of March. Won't be at that one but do check out their site.
Montreal, Quebec has won the site selection for WorldCon 2009. There is considerable anticipation concerning "Anticipation 2009". Don't let the fact that it's being held in French-Canadian territory deter you from getting your membership. WorldCon 2008 is in Denver, CO.
There are also rumours of a "Star Wars Celebration V", but that's all it is. If it happens it will probably happen in May 2009.
Rolling ponderously through the flood swells was the trunk of a tree. A giant of its species, it had probably been torn from the ground high on some mountain slope. Most of its limbs had been snapped off during its passage, but its sheer bulk made it a formidable assailant.
Vrala screamed again and dropped the line as Hafrin looked up. He grabbed for it, missed and barely caught the trailing end before it was dragged away by the river. Even as he hauled in the lifeline he knew with unerring certainty that he would not have time to secure the rope around his waist. One eye on the oncoming tree, Hafrin worked hand-over-hand to retrieve the rope. His fingers contacted the heavier line just as the trunk encountered an obstruction and lurched into the air. There was barely time to thrust one arm through the loop before the tree smashed into the remaining bridge span.
As his footing crumbled, Hafrin inhaled and pushed off.
I find it fascinating and compelling. This is a particular compliment to you, for although I've appeared in many a Sci-Fi movie and TV special, I am not, as you know, a particular lover of the genre. Your characters are drawn with great confidence and the dialogue has a maturity which belies the fact that this is your first novel. I can't wait to read the rest and find out what happens to Hafrin and Nichole and the destiny that awaits them.
Michael Sheard (author and actor, best known as Admiral Ozzle in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK)
